Overheard:
An overpriveleged white girl and guy in a lineup:
Girl: There's no such thing as like, minorities anymore.
Guy: Yeah, maybe in like the 1950s or something but not now.

  1. White people really believe this. I know, as a white person I hear it all the time.

  2. White people need to get over it...

  3. white people are the minority, if you're still thinking in terms of skin colour.

but honestly, i thought as a society we moved past that a long time ago.

  5. @4 Ahhh Racism. It's cool as long as it's against white people.

  6. Fuck, I'm white...can I not be associated with people like this? Like, is there some legal way for white people to disown these idiots from our race?

  7. What I love is how because they're white and ignorant you can somehow assume they're "overpriveleged". Ass.

  8. @7 Although I am white and very poor (the only reason I'm in uni is because of grants, scholarships and money saved from work) I still notice the fact that I am privileged. A student of a different race than I in the same exact situation and with the exact same qualifications as me will have a much harder time in their life than I. Do some research on the concept of white privallege to learn more about this.

  9. @8 I would say that in Canada a visible minority in the same position as you will probably have it much easier going on later in life. There will be a gross disparity in some cases between the two getting to university, but they will find it much easier than you from hereon in.

  10. @9 I'm not 8, but you might want to actually heed the advice to read up on white privilege.

  11. i don't know how people still believe that white privilege crap.

As a straight white male I'm automatically discriminated against. If I achieve something, people assume it's because I'm white and male, not because I deserve it. My voice isn't taken seriously as an individual, I'm only seen as a member of the "privileged" class.

If I could change my skin colour I would do so in a second. If I was black and achieving the things that I do now, my life would be incredibly easier.

Sure, I might get pulled over by cops more often, but honestly, I'd rather be mistaken for a gang member than be dismissed offhand because I'm white and male.

  12. @11 BOOHOO YOU GUYS DON'T KNOW WHAT ITS LIKE TO WIN THE GENETIC LOTTERY.

Would you really rather that every day people suspect you of being a thief/rapist/criminal because you're black? Or refer to you as "paki" no matter what part of the middle east you're from? Or constantly be stereotyped because you're an Asian at UW?

You have the privilege of never having to worry about being the minority. Never stressing over whether people make assumptions about you. Accept it.

Take a look at positions of power in government, what race are they? whooops!

  15. @12

You realize that white people are stereotyped as lazy, immoral degenerates all the time at UW right?

  16. Pointing at positions of power in the government isn't a great indicator of the experience that young people have.

The white people in powerful positions these days were accumulating advantages 50 years ago, when things were definitely different than they are now.

While there is definitely white privilege existing these days. There are some privileges that come along with being a minority as well (admittedly probably lesser in relative value). There is no need for the racism toward white people thats being expressed in this thread.

  17. I can't believe that people think white people get as much discrimination as those of other colours. Get your heads out of the sand. You think it's any coincidence that North America and Europe are wealthy and that continents like Africa are in abject poverty? Watch a documentary called "How Racist Are You" and you won't believe just how judgemental many people are over skin colour. If you think the 21st century is the age of enlightenment, you're an ignorant moron. There's a ton of shit going on that you have no idea about.
